Originally from New Haven, Connecticut, bassist Ron McClure (born November 22, 1941) has performed in hard bop, jazz-rock, free and bebop sessions and ensembles, among other things. McClure had individual instruction from Joseph Iadone, as well as from Hall Overton and Don Sebesky later in his career. McClure studied music at the Hartt School of Music, graduating in 1963, and began working with the Buddy Rich Sextet the following year. He then joined Maynard Ferguson’s big band and, later, Herbie Mann’s big band in 1964; he then took up the bass chair in the Wynton Kelly Trio, which had been left by Paul Chambers, in 1965; and he then joined the Wynton Kelly Trio in 196(playing behind guitarist Wes Montgomery).  Over the course of four decades, he worked alongside pianist Keith Jarrett and drummer Jack DeJohnette as a member of Charles Lloyd’s “classic quartet.” The group was named “Group of the Year” by Downbeat Magazine in 196In 1970, he co-founded the jazz-rock trio “The Fourth Way” with pianist-composer Mike Nock, drummer Eddie Marshall, and violinist Michael White, who would go on to become well-known. During the 1970s, McClure collaborated with saxophonist Joe Henderson, with whom he later formed the band Blood, Sweat, and Tears. Henderson departed the band before any recordings could be produced, but McClure appeared on three albums: Mirror Image, New City, and Live And Improvised (live and improvised). Henderson and McClure collaborated on four albums during their time together.  In the 1980s, McClure became a member of the band Quest, which was headed by saxophonist Dave Liebman and included drummer Billy Hart and pianist Richie Beirach. In addition, he collaborated with pianist Michel Petrucciani on a duet CD. McClure’s most significant collaborations were with Lee Konitz in the 1990s and early 2000s, and later with the reassembled Quest in the 2000s. McClure has worked as a leader on sessions for Ode, Bellaphon, EPC, Steeplechase, and Ken Music, among others. Other notable jazz players who have contributed to his solo work include John Scofield, John Abercrombie, Vic Juris, Paul Bley, Richie Beirach, and Randy Brecker, amongst others.
